Harnessing Burchill wind to help energy buyers reach net zero.
What is a Renewable Energy Certificate (REC)?
A Renewable Energy Certificate is a recognized way to track solar, wind, and other green energy sources as they flow into the electricity grid.
How many RECs will be available through Saint John Energy?
A REC, sold separately from the electricity itself, has its own market value. One REC represents one megawatt hour of electricity generated from a renewable source and delivered to the grid.
Why is Saint John Energy selling RECs?
The utility sees it as a way to support Saint John in the transition to green energy.
How does a REC work?
A Renewable Energy Certificate can only be sold once, and is renewable annually.
Will RECs sold by Saint John Energy be independently verified?
Yes. Saint John Energy is currently in discussions with an internationally recognized organization accredited to provide verification of RECs in North America.
When and how will RECs be made available?
RECs can be sold once the renewable power makes its way onto the grid. With Burchill expected to come online by the end of 2022, Saint John Energy’s RECs will be available in 2023.
What are the benefits of this smart water heating technology project to consumers?
The OSO smart water heaters will allow customers greater control and flexibility with their water heating.
Could smart hot water heaters affect customer comfort?
No. Customers will always have full control – they can opt-out or override if they wish to.
How do smart water heaters benefit the environment?
Smart water heaters contribute to reducing energy demand at peak times.
How will the benefits be achieved? How is peak avoided with smart water heaters?
Smart water heaters connected to our smart grid will allow us to make subtle adjustments to energy demand in ways customers will never notice.
What amount of carbon emissions could be avoided?
This project will be able to model how much of a difference.
When does this pilot project start and end?
It begins spring 2022 with installations and will continue for 12 months.
How many customers will be involved? Will there be a cost to them?
This pilot will begin with 50 new smart water heaters in Saint John, at no added cost to those taking part.
What happens after the pilot?
The findings from the pilot will guide us on future deployments. With proven results on a pilot, the technology could be deployed to thousands of homes across Saint John.
Electric vehicles seem much more expensive than regular vehicles. Why should I make the switch?
Electric vehicles may seem more expensive because the up-front cost is higher than regular vehicles, but they will save you money in fuel costs in the long run.
Can Saint John Energy’s Grid Handle Everyone Switching to Electric Vehicles?
We have confidence in our grid today and that we will be able to accommodate rapid growth in EV demand.
How is Saint John Energy Helping Right Now?
As part of our Smart Energy Project, we've deployed 8 Level 2 electric vehicle chargers in business locations in Saint John.
Why is Saint John energy pursuing a growth agenda?
We are committed to a strategy for growth fuelled by innovation because we want to remain a robust company for the people of Saint John for the next 100 years.
What is the short-term and long-term value of pursuing the growth strategy?
It will allow us to grow our impact on the economy up to $1.4 billion.
