What is a Renewable Energy Certificate (REC)?
A Renewable Energy Certificate is a recognized way to track solar, wind, and other green energy sources as they flow into the electricity grid.
Since renewable power mixes with electricity generated by other means, RECs were designed as a way of tracking the renewable energy.
RECs help organizations and individuals meet their net-zero goals by certifying that their electricity is renewable, which lowers or eliminates emissions associated with their electricity use.
(Net zero describes the target of reaching zero greenhouse gas emissions, either by eliminating them or by offsetting them through some other method.)
