When and how will RECs be made available?

RECs can be sold once the renewable power makes its way onto the grid. With Burchill expected to come online by the end of 2022, Saint John Energy’s RECs will be available in 2023.

In February 2022, Saint John Energy issued a public call for requests for proposals from local organizations that would be interested in purchasing renewable energy certificates. Port Saint John and Irving Oil responded, and are the first commercial customers for Saint John Energy’s RECs.

The utility is open to hearing from other businesses in Saint John interested in certifying their electricity as renewable and, later this year, will explore whether there is sufficient interest and demand in the residential market.
