How many RECs will be available through Saint John Energy?
A REC, sold separately from the electricity itself, has its own market value. One REC represents one megawatt hour of electricity generated from a renewable source and delivered to the grid.
The utility expects that up to 150,000 RECs will be available annually given the expected energy generation of the Burchill wind farm. Both Saint John Energy and its owner, the City of Saint John, will retain enough RECs to certify their corporate electricity needs as 100 per cent renewable.
That still leaves up to 90,000 RECs available. With the utility's focus on serving the local market, its priority will be to satisfy the need for RECs in Saint John.
