What is a Renewable Energy Certificate (REC)?
A Renewable Energy Certificate is a recognized way to track solar, wind, and other green energy sources as they flow into the electricity grid.
How many RECs will be available through Saint John Energy?
A REC, sold separately from the electricity itself, has its own market value. One REC represents one megawatt hour of electricity generated from a renewable source and delivered to the grid.
Why is Saint John Energy selling RECs?
The utility sees it as a way to support Saint John in the transition to green energy.
How does a REC work?
A Renewable Energy Certificate can only be sold once, and is renewable annually.
Will RECs sold by Saint John Energy be independently verified?
Yes. Saint John Energy is currently in discussions with an internationally recognized organization accredited to provide verification of RECs in North America.
When and how will RECs be made available?
RECs can be sold once the renewable power makes its way onto the grid. With Burchill expected to come online by the end of 2022, Saint John Energy’s RECs will be available in 2023.
