Norwegian firms are turning to Saint John Energy to bring innovative technology for a cleaner world.

Announced today in a joint virtual news conference from Saint John and Norway, the new partnerships will see Saint John Energy deploy leading smart water heating technology and energy forecasting techniques developed by OSO Energy, Kongsberg Digital and Epos Consulting.

The firms were joined at today’s event by representatives of the Government of Canada, through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and the Norwegian government, who lauded the partnership and contributed to investments in a $1.25 million (CDN) pilot project by Saint John Energy.

Saint John Energy President and CEO Ryan Mitchell was joined at the virtual event by Wayne Long, Member of Parliament for Saint John-Rothesay, speaking on behalf of the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Official Languages, and Minister responsible for ACOA.

From Norway, Jon Elvedal Fredriksen, Norway’s Ambassador to Canada, was joined by Roy A. Magnussen, CEO of OSO Hotwater Group, Jonathan Sørbye, Head of Export with Innovation Norway and Lasse Jamt, Vice-President Renewables & Utilities with Kongsberg Digital.

Forging partnerships with innovation leaders in Norway presents a tremendous opportunity. This is a country where 98% of its electricity comes from renewable sources and more than 80% of new vehicle purchases are EVs.
— Ryan Mitchell, CEO, Saint John Energy

For the pilot, Saint John Energy will install OSO Charge technology into its grid and select customers' homes. OSO Charge water heaters are forecastable, interactive, and offer a secure way to manage and balance energy. They come with the OSO inCharge app, which allows customers to see their energy use and observe its positive effect on peak demand and, in turn, greenhouse gas emissions.

Saint John Energy’s advanced smart grid will communicate directly with the OSO Charge units in customers’ homes to balance energy demand while prioritizing customer comfort.

Kongsberg Digital, with its digital twin technology solution Kognitwin Grid, will develop high-resolution simulations that will allow Saint John Energy to predict and manage spikes in energy usage that drive peak demand – demand which leads to increases in carbon emissions along with higher costs for the utility and its customers.

Epos Consulting will develop a customized framework for determination of the costs and benefits of future scale deployments as well as verifying project results.

Findings from the partnership will inform the future of controllable water heaters in Saint John and the benefits and applications of the OSO Charge technology here and around the world.

Funding investments include $501,000 from Innovation Norway, $200,000 from ACOA, $345,000 from OSO, $126,000 from Kongsberg, $48,000 from Epos Consulting and $30,000 from Saint John Energy. (All amounts in Canadian dollars.)
